"Today we colored pictures and put them on canvases!"

"Today we talked about cultural sightings that we saw after school. We saw: children playing in sand boxes, a flyer for musicSPARK (part of SPARK CON), people walking, the bus station at Moore Square. We also learned what a gesture drawing was. We met a couple of musicians from the NC Symphony and we listened to them perform. Some students videotaped the performance and some people were taking photos."

Today was our first day of CAM.
What we did was talk about Raleigh's past and colored old photos and wrote a 1-2 sentence letter to someone you know based on the photo. I think this will be a great class.

What is culture?

We spent quite a bit of time during our first program session discussing what was/is culture. We discovered that culture is really an integral part of our everyday lives. Culture is reflected in the food that we eat, the clothes that we wear, the things that we do for fun as well as the artistic traditions and trends of anywhere people live, work and play.

We made lists of the kinds of art, food, activities and classes that our participants like.

Art:
drama, drawing, dance, photography, installation, sculpture, singing, painting, music

Food:
cheese, macaroni and cheese, chocolate cake, chinese food, greek food, caesar salad, caprice salad, shrimp, yellow cake, spaghetti, sushi, pickles, pizza, lasagna

Activities:
taekwondo, shopping, walking, sports, being outside, shootin' hoops, playing with pets, taking photos, playing the piano, watching tv (specifically animation), cooking, painting

Favorite Classes:
art, social studies, spanish, language arts, gym, science, history, reading, math, auto shop

We are super excited to get to know our 2010 program participants this afternoon! Our theme for this year is Raleigh's culture and entertainment. We have already lined up visits with musicians from the NC Symphony and NC Opera as well as our good buddies over at the Raleigh Urban Design Center.

On February 10th our after school program visited the Raleigh Urban Design Center. UDC staff presented information on some of the current development projects happening in downtown Raleigh.

We talked a lot about what a makes a building "green".
Using renewable resources as construction materials
Using geothermal, hydroelectric, methane and other energy sources

Day 1!

We had our first session of the CAM after school program on Thursday January 22nd. All 18 kids were present! It was great to finally meet all the kids and get started on this exciting program. We were supposed to start our program on Tuesday, but it snowed!

We will be posting to this blog after each after school session. AND our participating students will be sharing their thoughts and photos to post here as well. Unfortunately we did not give our first student blogger very much time to write so I will be adding her post next week.

Week Three

This week we met with Elizabeth Alley from the Raleigh Urban Design Center AND Ken Bowers from Raleigh City Planning. We have included some of our conversation with Elizabeth Alley below...

Raleigh Urban Design Center:
We met with Elizabeth Alley of the Urban Design Center and learned about new projects going on in the downtown area:

Such as:
The neighborhood around the Governor's Mansion with old houses and new developments, Hotels with shops and elevator art, the Convention Center, the train station proposed for the warehouse district, Green Building, a City Plaza, who is the Downtown Raleigh Alliance and what is Raleigh Wide Open.

Elizabeth let us ask questions and voice our opinions. The Urban Design Center often hosts community forums to get feedback from Raleigh's citizens about plans for Raleigh.

Justice: What is the use of the RBC center?
Elizabeth: Shops on ground floor, offices and condos with balconies above

Josh: What type of fuel will the transit trains use?
Elizabeth: diesel
Josh: Doesn't that pollute?
Elizabeth: Yes to some degree. There has been some talk of eventually converting to biodeisel.

*The group then concluded that they would recommend that the City start off using biodeisel with the trains since the train stations have not yet been built.

Justice: Are we going to bring trolleys back?
Elizabeth: Yes, first engine driven and maybe eventually electric

Students: How do you get businesses that you want downtown, if we want a type of business, what do we do? The kids want more kid-friendly businesses downtown with things to do for teens
Lee: It would be great for the Downtown Raleigh Alliance to help recruit these businesses.

Logan: Does the city build these places or commission them?
Elizabeth: The city makes the rules and the developers build

Erin: Since lots of people are moving here, we need sky scrapers to fit them all in.

Students: We see lots of homeless people in Moore Square..does the city have any plans to help these people?
Elizabeth: There is a plan to end homeless in Raleigh in 10 years, working with prisons and mental facilities and helping during transition.

Josh: Do you think about the wildlife when developing...where will/do they go?
Elizabeth: Raleigh is always looking for new park space

Other ideas proposed by the students:
Kids proposed a public art idea for the building on the corner of Person and Martin Streets that used to be a gas station..to re-use the light fixtures in colored light and paint the building in fun colors with horse murals.

We spent most of this week taking lots of photos of downtown Raleigh! Lee asked us to look at downtown and take photos that show our unique perspective...

During the first program session on April 1st, we discussed our impressions of downtown Raleigh and the neighborhoods that we live in.

What we like about downtown Raleigh:
1. Downtown has some BIG buildings
2. My Mom works downtown!
3. It is easy to get from one place to another.
4. You can walk around.
5. I like the Metro Ice Cream Shop.
6. There are lots of different shops and good restaurants.
7. There are lots of museums you can visit.
8. There are a bunch of places to go.
9. The IMAX theater at Marbles!
10.Our school and restaurants.

What we like about the neighborhoods where we live:
1. My neighborhood has a park!
2. I have a lot of friends in my neighborhood and there are places for me to skateboard.
3. My neighborhood has a pool!
4. There are fields and parks to run around in.
5. I wish there more kids my age in my neighborhood.
6. Lots of open space, we have a golf course running through our neighborhood.
7. There are A LOT of kids in my neighborhood.
8. My neighborhood is big and everybody knows everybody else so you feel safe.
9. My neighborhood has two parks near it!
